Last weekend, the Stanleys were held in Wollongong. What's that? Well, it's the annual awards night for Australian cartoonists, and the award is named after Stan Cross, who wrote and drew the classic Australian cartoon titled "For gorsake stop laughing - this is serious". A Stanley award features a bronze version of the two men hanging from the girder, and the awards are highly sought-after by the cartooning community.
On the eve of the Stanleys, Nick invited two cartoonists into the studio for a bit of a chat, but as all good cartoonists, they brought their pads and textas, and proceeded to do caricatures of Nick as they were being interviewed.
Who said men can't do two things at once?
In the studio were Tony Rafty and Steve Panozzo. Tony is 92, and started his career as a war artist, before making a speciality of sports caricaturing. Even though Tony retired in 1980, he still claims to have sketched every major athlete at Commonwealth and Olympic games up to 2004! Tony is also well known as a man with a bottomless well of anecdotes, and as a mentor to several generations of cartoonists.
One of those budding pencillers was Steve Panozzo, who went from being Tony's awed apprentice, to a career in newspapers, then, when the deadlines were wearing him down, to a freelance artist-for-hire.
The two men both produced a caricature, which they presented to an overwhelmed Nick Rheinberger. And you can see the results below, along with a picture of Nick in the studio. Tell us what you think on our Message board.
